The company was founded by Thierry Hermès as a harness workshop in Paris in 1837. This was the era of carriages. The business served a nobel clientele and won awards. Thierry’s son and grandsons expanded the business into saddles and retail.
The company gained exclusive rights to use a new technology, the zipper, in French leather goods and clothing. The zipper became associated with the brand in France.
Handbags were introduced in the 1920s with a collection designed for the owner’s wife. Women’s couture apparel followed.
Scarves arrived in 1937 and soon became a part of French culture.
Grace Kelly, princess of Monaco, became associated with the brand after a 1956 photo captured her holding a signature Hermès handbag. It became known as the “Kelly bag.”

Hermès New York flagship is on Madison Avenue in Manhattan’s Upper East Side. This store is being replaced by another Madison Avenue store in 2022.
