The Art Fair That Isn’t an Art Fair
The Independent is an art fair that tries not to be an art fair. It grew out of the Dia Center for the Arts, the now legendary land art gallery that pioneered West 22nd St and the entire Chelsea neighborhood as an art district all the way back in 1987 when Chelsea was scary.
The 2021 Independent features museum quality exhibitions produced by forty international art galleries of artists who are relevant and timely to the moment. Participation is by invitation only and unlike most of the other Armory Week art fairs, is very grounded in New York City’s art scene. In a way the Independent is the city’s representative during Armory Week. Most of the other fairs have an international focus.
It’s the Independent’s first season at Cipriani South Street, one of the newest outposts of the famed New York Italian restaurant family.
