Juan Luis Guerra Popularized Merengue Around the World

Juan Luis Guerra is a beloved Dominican merengue and bachata star who is a 3x Grammy and 21x Latin Grammy winner. Guerra is one of the artists who popularized bachata internationally. He is a huge star, but a good person. Fans love and respect him for that in addition to his music.

During the pandemic, Guerra recorded an HBO Latino concert special on the beaches of the Dominican Republic. The special debuts Thursday, June 3, 2021 at 9pm ET.

“Literal” Wins a Latin Grammy

Guerra released “Literal,” his 14th studio album on May 31, 2019. It won Best Contemporary Tropical/Tropical Fusion Album at the 20th Latin Grammy Awards on November 14, 2019.

Juan Luis Guerra

Guerra was born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic on June 7, 1957. He earned a degree in jazz composition from the legendary Berklee College of Music in Boston in 1982.

These are some of Guerra’s award-winning albums.

Soplando

1984 ~ Back in the DR, he put together a band called the 440 (that’s the frequency of a tuning fork A used to tune string instruments) and released his first album Soplando (I’m Blowing).

After that he began playing more merengue.

Ojalá Que Llueva Café

1988 ~ The album (I hope it rains coffee) was Guerra’s international breakthrough.

Bachata Rosa

1992 ~ Guerra won a Grammy Award for Best Tropical Latin Album.

La Llave de Mi Corazon

2008 ~ Guerra won another Grammy for Best Tropical Latin Album.
