Juan Martín del Potro

Juan Martín del Potro is Argentina’s top tennis player. He is a fan favorite for his long winning streaks and ability to comeback from injury. You can always hear Argentines cheering him on from the stands like at a soccer match.

Del Potro’s best Men’s Singles performances are winning the 2009 US Open and a silver medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics. He was part of Argentina’s winning team at the 2016 Davis Cup.

Del Potro beats Federer at the BNP Paribas Open

Del Potro ended world #1 Roger Federer’s 17-match winning streak, 7-5, 6-7 (8), 7-6 (2) at the BNP Paribas Open on March 18, 2018.

The two played a hard match for over two and a half hours. Del Potro was excited to win because he how has won a Grand Slam, an Olympic medal, the Davis Cup, and now an ATP Masters 1000 title.


2017 US Open

Del Potro has been one of the most exciting players in the 2017 US Open.

So far, Del Potro beat Henri Laaksonen (Swiss) 6-4 | 7(11)-6(9) | 6-1, Adrian Menendez-Maceiras (Spain) 6-2 | 6-3 | 7(7)-6(3), Roberto Bautista Agut (Spain) 6-3 | 6-3 | 6-4, and Dominic Thiem (Austria).

Del Potro almost retired from illness in his fourth round match after losing two sets to Dominic Thiem 1-6 | 2-6|. Del Potro composed himself to win the third set 6-1 and the crowd went wild. Their energy fueled Del Potro through two more sets 7(7)-6(1) | 6-4.

That’s classic Del Potro. If you don’t knock him out, he will come back to get you.

Then while everyone was expecting a Nadal vs Federer US Open semi final, Del Potro thrilled his fans by defeating No. 3 ranked Roger Federer in the quarter finals 7-5 | 3-6 | 7(10)-6 (8) | 6 -4.

10th BNP Paribas Showdown 2017

Juan Martín del Potro is Argentina’s top Tennis Player

Del Potro is from Tandil, Argentina, a small town between Buenos Aires and Bahia Blanca, 2-1/2 hours drive inland from Mar del Plata.

His first major was the 2006 French Open. Del Potro earned his first top-10 ranking in October 2008.

2009 was a peak year. Del Potro made the Australian Open quarter finals, French Open semi finals and won the US Open.

After reaching a career-high No. 4 ranking in January 2010, a right-wrist injury took Del Potro out of competition.

Del Potro came back in 2011.  In 2012, he made quarter finals in the Australian, French, and US Opens. By January 2014, Del Potro was back to a No. 4 ranking when a left-wrist injury took him out of competition again.

Coming back again in 2016 Del Potro took silver at the 2016 Rio Olympics and made the US Open quarter finals.
