Kings of Stride: Eubie, Fats & the Lion

Kings of Stride at the 92nd Street Y

Kings of Stride: Eubie, Fats & the Lion at the 92nd Street Y Tuesday, July 26, 2016 is a concert of stride piano, the Jazz style that grew out of Ragtime.

About Kings of Stride: Eubie, Fats & the Lion

Jazz piano developed from Ragtime of which Scott Joplin is the leading example. Ragtime was a bit mechanical like a player piano or the movement in a silent movie. Stride began to open things up. It built on the left hand with a bass note followed by a chord. The beats started to swing and players brought in more modern harmonics. It’s that honky-tonk piano sound.

Stride was developed by James P. Johnson, Thomas “Fats” Waller, and Willie “The Lion” Smith.

The evening’s band is: Bill Charlap, Ted Rosenthal, and Rossano Sportello on piano. Anat Cohen joins on clarinet. The rhythm section is David Wong on bass and Aaron Kimmel on drums.
