The Latin Grammys recognize outstanding achievement in music that is mostly in Spanish or Portuguese.

17th Annual Latin Grammys 2016 Performers

Latin Grammy nominees were announced September 21, 2016.

The 17th Annual Latin Grammys are at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Thursday, November 17, 2016. Argentine-Mexican actor Sebastián Rulli and Puerto Rican singer-songwriter Roselyn Sánchez host the show. Watch it live on Univision at 8pm. A red carpet special “Noche de Estrellas” starts at 7pm.

Performers include Alexis y Fido; J Balvin; Banda Los Recoditos; Los Fabulosos Cadillacs; Farruko featuring Ky-Mani Marley; Joss Favela, Fonseca, Gente De Zona, Jesse & Joy, Juanes; Mon Laferte; Pablo López; Manuel Medrano; Laura Pausini; Prince Royce featuring Gerardo Ortiz; Las Tres Grandes: Eugenia León, Tania Libertad, and Guadalupe Pineda; Diego Torres featuring Rachael Platten; Carlos Vives; Wisin; and Yandel.

17th Annual Latin Grammys 2016 Presenters

Presenters include nominees Bebe, Marilina Bertoldi, Paula Fernandes, Jacob Forever, Enrique Iglesias, ile, Poncho Lizarraga (Banda El Recodo), La Marisoul (La Santa Cecilia), Jesús “Chino” Miranda (Chino y Nacho), Niña Pastori, Luciano Pereyra, Sin Bandera, Tommy Torres, Julieta Venegas, and Charlie Zaa.

Additional presenters include Chicago Cubs infielder Javier Báez and pitcher Aroldis Chapman, actress Angelique Boyer, “Orange Is The New Black” actress Jackie Cruz, singer Becky G, Kany García, award-winning actor Diego Luna, legendary music arranger Eduardo Magallanes, Draco Rosa, and “Velvet” series actor Miguel Ángel Silvestre.

1. Record of the Year

Record of the Year is awarded to singles or tracks.

2. Album of the Year

Album of the Year is awarded to albums with mostly new material.

3. Song of the Year

Song of the Year is a songwriter’s award. The song has to be sung mostly in Spanish or Portuguese.

4. Best New Artist

Best New Artist is awarded to artists whose albums are successful in regional markets, but have not yet gone global.


Pop Field

These are Spanish-language albums only.

5. Best Contemporary Pop Vocal Album

Urban Field

7. Best Urban Fusion/Performance

Best Urban Fusion/Performance is for singles or tracks.

8. Best Urban Music Album

Best Urban Song is a songwriter’s award.


Rock Field

Portuguese-language recordings are eligible in the Portuguese Language Field.

10. Best Rock Album

Note how Argentines dominate this category. When Rock started in Spanish, there were Mexican cover bands, but it was Argentines who started writing Rock songs in Spanish.

Best Rock Song is a songwriter’s award for singles or tracks.


Alternative Field

The Alternative Field is supposed to be for music outside the mainstream music consciousness.

Tropical Field

Tropical is Caribbean. Portuguese-language music is not eligible in this field.

16. Best Cumbia/Vallenato Album

17. Best Contemporary Tropical Album

18. Best Traditional Tropical Album

Best Traditional Tropical Album is for music in the Son, Danzón, Guaracha, or Bomba styles.

19. Best Tropical Fusion Album

Best Tropical Fusion Album is for classic tropical rhythms such as Salsa, Merengue, Vallenato, Cumbia, and Bachata, mixed with cutting edge sounds such as Electronic, Rock, and Pop.

20. Best Tropical Song

Best Tropical Song is a songwriter’s award.


Singer-Songwriter Field

21. Best Singer-Songwriter Album

Best Singer-Songwriter Album is for solo artists and duos.


Regional Mexican Field

Regional Mexican is the most popular Latin music in the United States.

22. Best Ranchero/Mariachi Album

Best Ranchero/Mariachi Album is not being awarded this year because of a lack of entries.

23. Best Banda Album

24. Best Tejano Album

25. Best Norteño Album

26. Best Regional Mexican Song
