Salvadoran NYC is centered in Long Island’s Nassau and Suffolk counties. Salvadoran American youth call themselves “Salvis.”

The big migration to New York (and Washington DC) was triggered by the Salvadoran Civil War of the 1980s. There are more than half a million Salvadorans living in New York City. We are one of the communities that makes New York work.

Salvis

El Salvador is on Central America’s Pacific Coast. Its neighbors are Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua.

Like all Latin Americans, we are a mix of peoples and cultures. Indigenous culture remains strong. The Nahua (Pipil) were an important culture, but there were many, including Mayan. The colonizers were Spanish who arrived in 1524. The first African was brought in 1528. Abolition came in 1825.

There are also Arab influences from Palestinians who came mostly between 1880 and 1920. Lebanese came during the wars of the 1940s and 1960s. Arab Salvadorans have done well in business and politics.

The Salvadoran national dish is pupusas which are delicious stuffed tortillas. Don’t order too many because they are filling. We cook many versions of soups that are like sancochos. Elote Loco, grilled corn with ketchup, mayonnaise, mustard, Worchestershire sauce and cheese, is a popular street food. You see variations at NYC street fairs.
