Lord & Taylor is America’s oldest luxury department store.

It started as a dry goods store in New York City in 1826, and moved to its Fifth Avenue flagship 676,000 square-foot location in 1914.

Lord & Taylor was long a leader in the fashion industry. It was the first department store to move up to Fifth Avenue. It was the first to open a branch store. Lord & Taylor developed the concept of the personal shopper or shopping concierge. Lord & Taylor also created the American tradition of Christmas window diorama displays.

In 2008, Lord & Taylor’s parent company acquired the Hudson’s Bay Company. It also owns Saks Fifth Avenue.

Today Lord & Taylor is leading the way out of bricks and mortar stores. After Christmas 2018, the Lord & Taylor flagship store will be redesigned to accommodate the headquarters of WeWork and a smaller Lord & Taylor store.
