Ludovico Einaudi is an Italian classical pianist and composer who is one of Europe’s best-selling solo pianists. He does a lot of film scoring and really blurs the lines between genres.

Ludovico Einaudi Expands the Possibilities of Classical Music

Ludovico Einaudi was born in Turin, Italy in 1955 and trained in composition at the Conservatory of Milan. He was a very traditional classical artist.

A 1982 scholarship to the Tanglewood Music Festival in western Massachusetts opened his ears to minimalism, pop, and world music.

Einaudi did a lot of film scoring in the 1990s including the television series Doctor Zhivago. That brought the use of light electronics into his work.

His first solo piano album Le Onde (BMG Ricordi, 1996) changed Einaudi’s path from being a composer to being a star solo pianist.

I Giorni (BMG Ricordi, 2001) was inspired by visits to Africa. The BBC used the title track to promote art and culture programming. That led to a hit single.

Divenire (Ponderosa Music and Art/Decca, 2006) includes the popular track Primavera recorded with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic.

Einaudi’s latest album is Elements (Decca / Ponderosa Music & Art, 2015).

Einaudi is something of a classical pop star.
