Maelo was born Ismael Ruiz Hernandez in New York City on October 22, 1966. His family moved to Puerto Rico while he still a child.

Maelo’s music career started in 1985 with Pedro Conga and his International Orchestra. Their big hit together was “No te Quites La Ropa.”

The artist’s biggest hits include “Atrévete,” “Vicio”, “Quiero Volver,” “Si Supieras,” “Te Quiero Amor,” and “Me Niegas Tango Amor.”

Maelo’s “Puro Corazón” earned a Latin Grammy nomination for Best Salsa Album in 2008.
