Mala Rodríguez Takes Her Bad Girl Image All the Way to the Bank

María Rodríguez Garrido was born in Jerez de la Frontera, Cádiz, Spain on February 13, 1979. Happy badday girl!

Jerez is the big city near the port of Cádiz, home of the Spanish navy and many colonizers of the Americas. The city is famous for flamenco, sherry wine, horse riding, and its medieval Moorish fortress. This is Andalucía.

La Mala rose to prominence in Seville’s 1990s hip-hop scene on her growling raps and “bad girl” persona.

Men are easily manipulated with sexual imagery of which “La Mala” is a master. She is definitely a top.

As her career developed, Mala moved to Madrid and released her first album “Lujo Ibérico” in 2000. The album’s hit “Yo Marco el Minuto” put her on the map. It’s kind of freestyle.

In 2003, the video of “La Niña” from “Alevosía was banned for its depiction of a young girl dealing. The bad girl keeps growing up and it turns out she’s not so bad after all. Know what I mean? Anyway you work with what you got and Mala is real. She’s an international star now.

Her song “No pidas perdón” won the 2010 Latin Grammy for Best Urban Song. Her 2012 album “Bruja” won Best Urban Music Album. In 2019, Mala became the first urban artist to win Spain’s National Music Award. That’s a big deal.

Mala is bad, but not bad, but her 2020 album really is “Mala.” This outing is more reggaeton.

The trick with being bad is that you have to be good at it, or you’ll end up on the street. In 2021, Mala published her memoir, “Cómo ser Mala” (How to be Bad).
