Maria Tomasula (1958) is an American artist with a Mexican heritage.

She did her Bachelor of Fine Arts, Summa Cum Laude, at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and her Masters of Fine Arts at Northwestern University.

Tomasula has been exhibiting in solo shows since 1984. Today she is a Professor of Arts and Letters at the University of Notre Dame.

The richness of Tomasula’s still-life oil paintings caught our eye. The floral designs are spiritual somehow, and very Mexican in a way.

Tomasula’s work combines the emotional intensity of a Frida Kahlo painting, with the brashness of a lowrider car paint job, and the spirituality of an Alex Gray chakra painting.

There is the Mayan Tree of Life, and a little of Salvador Dali’s surrealism too. When you look at Tomasula’s work, little unexpected things keep popping out.
