Mark di Suvero is a Chinese-born (Shanghai, 1933) Italian-American. His father was the Italian naval attaché in Shanghai.
Di Suvero is an Abstract Expressionist sculptor. He was working in construction in NYC so he started incorporating discarded construction materials into his work. Like Rauschenberg, Di Suvero mined the deconstruction of Lower Manhattan for materials.
Di Suvero broke his back doing construction work. As part of his rehabilitation, he learned to weld. That was something he used later in his art. Di Suvero was also the first artist to use a crane to make sculpture.
Green Gallery
Di Suvero had his first solo exhibition at Richard Bellamy’s Green Gallery in Midtown, Manhattan in 1960.
Park Place
Di Suvero was a co-founder of Park Place in 1962. It was one of New York’s first artist cooperative galleries.
Socrates Sculpture Park
Di Suvero founded Socrates Sculpture Park in Astoria, Queens in 1986. His studio is nearby.
Joie de Vivre
Joie de Vivre a 70-foot sculpture of “open-ended tetrahedrons” is installed in Zuccoti Park (formerly Liberty Plaza) at Broadway and Liberty St in Manhattan’s Financial District.
