Masterworks: Unpacking Fashion

Viktor & Rolf, Spring 2010

Masterworks: Unpacking Fashion at the Metropolitan Museum of Art November 18, 2016 to February 5, 2017 is an exhibition of the highest level of fashion as art form and history.

About Masterworks: Unpacking Fashion

The exhibit is a tour through fashion history from the early 18th century to the present. It uses the metaphor of unpacking as a means to explain the significance of the 60 pieces on display to the world of fashion. The exhibition focuses on pieces that changed the course of fashion. Some contemporary pieces are displayed with examples of their historic inspirations.

The exhibition was organized by assistant curator Jessica Regan and curator Andrew Bolton. Many of the newer pieces were part of the Harold Koda Gift which was created to honor the Costume Institute curator who retired this year after 15 years of leading the Institute.
