Menkes is one of Spain’s leading manufacturers of Flamenco shoes and clothing. The company was started in 1950 by Marcos Menkes. The young man from Tangiers had apprenticed with Marbel, a Catalan dressmaker who made costumes for theater and film.
Menkes set up his shop in Madrid when he was just 21 years old. The business made regional costumes, but soon expanded into making clothes and footwear for famous actors, dancers, singers, and gymnasts. In the 1950s, the Menkes shop in Madrid was frequented by movie stars and entertainers of the era.
Flamenco is particularly hard on shoes, so quality footwear is important. In addition to dancers, theatrical companies like the Metropolitan Opera, the Rockettes, Cirque du Soleil, and the Lido and Crazy Horse revues in Paris all rely on Menkes shoes.
Menkes shoes look as good on the street as they do on stage. Today, Menkes has shops all over Spain in Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Bilbao, Alicante, Zaragoza, Santander, Murcia and Valencia. Menkes has international stores in Paris and New York City.
