Channeling the First Exposition of Mexican Folk Art

In 1921, just after the Mexican Revolution, the first exposition of Mexican folk art, Exposición de artes populares mexicanas (Murillo & Porter), explored a new Mexican identity.

Contemporary Mexican identity forges a nation out over 60 active Indigenous groups with the powerful legacy of Spanish colonial, Aztec, Maya and Olmec civilizations.

The question of forging a national identity is still relevant today and in the United States too. How do you create one from many?

This exhibition examines the same question as the first exposition of Mexican folk art in 1921. The fine handicrafts in this show reveal Mexican identity to be extremely diverse, yet somehow unified.
