Nation Beat Plays Brazilian Maracatu Forró Funk Jazz Fusion at Flushing Town Hall

Nation Beat is a New York Brazilian maracatu, forró, funk, jazz band.

¡Legal! (cool), But What is That?

Let’s break that down.

  • Maracatu is basically a Brazilian carnival tradition from Pernambuco state in Northeastern, Brazil. The carnival groups were called nação’s (nations). They’re like different religious brotherhoods, or maybe even quilombos, the forest towns founded by people who freed themselves.
  • Forró is a country dance from Northeastern, Brazil. The dance is a lot like Dominican bachata. It’s danced very close between the legs. It’s very popular in France.
  • Funk derives from rhythm & blues and rock in the United States.
  • Jazz derives from Haitian Diaspora traditions in New Orleans.

It all works together because it’s all African Diaspora music.
