The next celebration is Wednesday, December 20, 2023.

We are not sure why in the United States National Sangria Day is in December because we think of Sangria as a summer drink. Maybe it’s to remind us of better days ahead at the start of winter.

Bloodletting

In the poetic sense of the Spanish language, sangría means bloodletting.

European Union regulations define sangria as made with wine from Spain or Portugal. Spanish Rioja red wine is the traditional wine, although today you can make Sangria blanca (white wine sangria).

You can use local fruits. Oranges, apples and pears; peaches, nectarines and berries, and pineapple are popular.

The drink can be fortified with rum, brandy or orange liqueur. Be sure to let everyone know it is stronger, or your friends and family may drink it like fruit juice.

Drink responsibly.
