New Directors/New Films 2017

New Directors / New Films festival presents emerging filmmakers from around the world with dual screenings at the Museum of Modern Art and Film Society of Lincoln Center.

46th annual New Directors / New Films 2017

The 46th annual New Directors / New Films festival is March 15-26, 2017.

This year’s main slate explores the lives of New Yorkers on the move. None are Latin films. But in addition to several French films, the festival is screening movies from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Mexico.

The Future Perfect (El Futuro perfecto)

German director Nele Wohlatz is fascinated with the effects of language.

The Future Perfect tells the story of a Chinese teenager who starts working in Argentina without being able to speak Spanish. She enrolls in Spanish classes and uses her new language’s conditional tense to imagine what might happen. This was a “Best First Feature” winner at the 2016 Locarno Film Festival. In Spanish and Mandarin with English subtitles.

In Three Sentences About Argentina (Tres oraciones sobra la Argentina) which is also screening, Wohlatz turns vintage footage of Argentine skiers into language exercises.
