New DIrectors / New Films is a festival of emerging filmmakers from around the world. The Festival screened talents Pedro Almodóvar and Spike Lee when nobody knew who they were. It is co-produced by Film Society of Lincoln Center and MoMA, the Museum of Modern Art.

The 47th New Directors / New Films festival is March 28 – April 8, 2018 at Film Society of Lincoln Center’s Walter Reade Theater and MoMA, the Museum of Modern Art.
Opening Night ~ Matangi/Maya/M.I.A
The Opening Night film is the New York Premiere of Stephen Loveridge’s 2018 Sri Lankan film Matangi/Maya/M.I.A. It’s a biopic about M.I.A, a Tamil rapper from Sri Lanka. Her father was one of the founders of the Tamil Tigers revolutionary group. Loveridge went to art school with her in London in the nineties.
Director Stephen Loveridge and M.I.A. will introduce both screenings on March 28 and do Q&A on March 29.

Closing Night ~ Hale County This Morning, This Evening
The Closing Night film is the New York Premiere of RaMell Ross’ 2018 film Hale County This Morning, This Evening. Director Ross spent five years with African American families living in Hale County, Alabama.
The region is remembered for Walker Evans and James Aee’s 1941 photographic essay Let Us Now Praise Famous Men which documented the lives of rural Americans during the Great Depression.
Comparing the two works of art, you can see what has changed and what hasn’t changed in 77 years.
Director RaMell Ross will do Q&As.

Azougue Nazaré
Azougue Nazaré is Tiago Melo’s 2017 Brazilian film about Maracatu, the Afro-Brazilian burlesque carnival tradition of Pernambuco in Recife in northwestern Brazil.
This is Tiago Melo’s first film. He worked on Kleber Mendonça Filho’s Aquarius and Gabriel Mascaro’s Neon Bull. He was awarded the Bright Future prize at this year’s Rotterdam International Film Festival.
In Portuguese with English subtitles.

Cocote
Cocote is Nelson Carlo de los Santos Arias’ 2017 Dominican film about Alberto, an evangelical gardener who returns to his hometown for his father’s funeral after his dad is murdered by a local thug.
The funeral is a mixture of Catholic and West African traditions which challenge Alberto’s evangelical beliefs, and the family wants vengeance.
In Spanish with English subtitles.
