Onika Tanya Maraj was born in Saint James, Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago in 1982, but raised in Queens, New York City. 🇹🇹

Her heritage is Dougla, Afro-Indo Trinidadian. Trinidad has a South Asian plurality (the largest group, but not a majority). That’s why we have good curry at New York Carnival, the West Indian Day Parade. The Caribbean is multicultural, and Trinidad is one of the most multicultural parts of the Caribbean.

Like many children, when things got tough at home, Minaj found comfort in her own fantasy worlds. Her fascination with pink is a metaphor for that perfect Barbie world of our dreams. Minaj went to LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts (as in the movie “Fame”). Though she tried acting, music is her calling, though her theatrical sense shines through her music.

Minaj started getting attention from mixtapes in 2007. Lil Wayne signed her to his label and she started working with a lot of top artists. Her rap on Kanye West’s “Monster” (YouTube) featuring Jay-Z, Rick Ross, and Justin Vernon stole the show. She was already on her way, but after that rap Minaj was golden.

Her debut album “Pink Friday” (2010) made Minaj a superstar.

Minaj brings her childhood fantasy alter egos into her musical persona. She’s is one of the women who is defining rap today. Minaj is very playful. Being a New Yorker, she’s going to do whatever she wants, and if you disrespect her, you better get out of the way. She is fierce. Gotta love that!
