One of America’s Great Theaters

The Apollo opened in 1913 during the Vaudeville Era, just in time for the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s. Back in the day, Dewey “Pigmeat” Markham became one of the godfathers of Rap with his famous refrain, “Here come the judge!”

It began focusing on African American talent in 1934. Jazz, Swing, R&B, Gospel and Blues shined on its stage. In the 1940s, the Apollo was a center for Jazz and Swing. It was part of the Black Arts Movement of the 1960s-70s, which we call Harlem Renaissance 2.0. Today the Apollo Theater is at the center of the current renaissance in Black Arts which we call Harlem Renaissance 3.0.
