The Former Waverly Theater
Today, IFC Center launches independent films that feed into the Independent Film Channel. It also hosts DOC NYC, America’s largest documentary festival in November.
The 1807 building was originally the Dutch Reform Church.
In the 1930s, the old church was converted into The Waverly Theater which became a well-known art house cinema.
In the 1960s The Waverly became a hangout for young people in The Village. It’s mentioned several times in the 1967 Rock musical “Hair” produced by the Public Theater in the East Village.
In 1976, The Waverly became the home of midnight screenings of The Rocky Horror Picture Show which grew into a nationwide audience participation cinema experience. As a kid in the Los Angeles suburbs, I remember thinking how strange the Rocky Horror fans were. After living in and around New York City for more than a decade, nothing seems strange anymore.
The Waverly closed in 2001 right after the 9/11 attack shocked New York City. IFC Center opened in 2005.
