Open Roads New Italian Cinema is a Window on Italian Culture

The Open Roads New Italian Cinema 2023 film festival brings Italian movie legends and emerging filmmakers to Lincoln Center screens. Italians have a particular sense of style and humor, so there are many interesting films to choose from.

The opening-night film is Francesca Archibugi’s “The Hummingbird,” an adaptation of Sandro Veronesi’s award-winning novel. It’s an epic story of three generations of family played by a bevy of Italian stars.

There is a focus on films by Mario Martone with his latest, “Nostalgia” and two of his earlier works.

In “Princess” Roberto De Paolis puts a surprising spin on an immigrant living in a makeshift forest encampment who meets a recluse hunting mushrooms. She dreams that she might have met a way towards inclusion. Life is hard, and life is beautiful, but at the end of the day, everyone just wants to be loved.

The festival is co-presented by Film at Lincoln Center and Cinecittà in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute and support from Casa Italian Zeerilli Marimò at NYU.
