Discover the classic work of Mexican artists of the 1700s in Painted in Mexico, 1700-1790: Pinxit Mexici at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in Manhattan’s Upper East Side from April 24 – July 22, 2018.
Painted in Mexico, 1700 – 1790: Pinxit Mexici
This is the first major exhibition to cover the topic of Mexican painters of the 1700s. It was co-organized by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and Fomento Cultural Banamex.
After the conquest of Mexico (New Spain) in 1519 – 1521, artists from Spain set up workshops in Mexico. Some of these workshops lasted for generations and produced their own elite artists.
This work is a reflection of the imposed Spanish culture, but also something that is uniquely Mexican. In a sign of increasing confidence, the artists began signing their work and added “pinxit Mexici” (painted in Mexico) to their signatures.

The exhibition comes to The Met Museum after shows at the Palacio de Cultura Citibanamex – Palacio de Iturbide in Mexico City (June – October, 2017), and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (November 2017 – March 2018).

Painted in Mexico, 1700 – 1790: Pinxit Mexici Tickets
Tickets are available at the door or online.
Regular admission (including tickets purchased online) is $25 for adults, $17 for Seniors (65 and over), $12 for students, and free for children under 12 with an adult.
If you are a New Yorker and these prices are too much for you, don’t be dismayed. The Met has a policy of allowing New Yorkers (the entire state) to pay what you choose when you buy tickets at the ticket counter. You must show some kind of New York address identification.
Tickets include same day admission to The Met Fifth Avenue, The Met Brauer, and The Met Cloisters.
