Queens Drive-In Screens Lizzie Borden’s Feminist Sci-Fi “Born in Flames”

Queens Drive-In at the New York Hall of Science (Rooftop Films)

Queens Drive-In at the New York Hall of Science (Rooftop Films)

The Queens Drive-In is a drive-in movie theater in the parking lot at the New York Hall of Science in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, Queens.

This is a co-presentation of the Museum of the Moving Image, Rooftop Films and the New York Hall of Science.

We should thank Queens Borough President Sharon Lee, NY City Council member Francisco Moya and Jimmy Van Bramer, and NYC Parks for making this happen.

This is love in the time of Coronavirus. We love New York!

Landfall

A still from “Landfall” (Cecilia Aldarondo/Rooftop Films)

Friday, August 28, 2020 at 7:30pm

Cecilia Aldarondo, USA, 2019

Through shard-like glimpses of everyday life in post-Hurricane María Puerto Rico, Landfall examines a ruined world at the brink of transformation, spinning a cautionary tale for our times.

Preceded by “Para Gregorio” (For Gregorio) by Cristobal Guerra, USA, ¡Boricua!

The director is doing Q&A after the movie at 10pm. Aldarondo is something: a 2019 Guggenheim Fellow, 2017 Women at Sundance Fellow and more. She’s the Assistant Professor of Art at Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts. ¡Boricua!

Do the Right Thing

Thursday, September 3, 2020 at 7:30pm

Spike Lee, USA, 1989

Spike Lee’s full-throttle portrait of a particularly eventful, hot summer day in the life of a Bed-Stuy neighborhood is a remarkable dramatization of race relations in America.

Preceded by the Stories from the City program: eclectic short films about navigating public and private spaces in our sprawling metropolis.

Born in Flames

Saturday, September 5, 2020 at 7:30pm

Lizzie Borden, USA, 1983

The essential ’80s feminist sci-fi indie—an all-out attack on the patriarchy that’s lost none of its sting.

Preceded by the Women’s Work program: spunky short films by women that highlight the strenuous work of life and labor.
