Raul Jaurena

Uruguayan culture in New York Instituto Cervantes presents Raul Jaurena, one of the world’s bandoneón masters and 2007 Latin Grammy winner for best Tango Album, in concert Wed Oct 17, 2012, 7pm, $15

Raul Jaurena

A New Yorker, originally from Uruguay, Raul Jaurena (Raúl) is one of the world’s leading bandoneón players. Raul learned the bandoneón from his father and joined his first tango orchestra when he was eight years old. He plays the traditional tango repertoire, the Tango Nuevo of Astor Piazzolla, and is himself a prolific composer.

Raul performed with Piazzolla himself at the Montreal Jazz Festival. Piazzolla has called Raul, “one of the greatest bandoneón players ever. Raul was a Grammy nominee for his CD “Tango Bar” and his “Te Amo Tango,” recorded here in New York, won a Latin Grammy for “best Tango Album” in 2007. As a soloist, Raul performs with prominent ensembles and orchestras around the world.
