RISE (Representation, Inclusion, & Support for Employment) Theatre Directory promotes visibility of individuals who work backstage, behind-the-scenes, and in support of theatre making to producers, general managers, theaters, and employers. The national directory is a public service tool, available to all, created with a special focus for women, people of color, and folks from underrepresented communities. The directory will enhance our existing industry networks and set the stage for future generations of theatre makers. Only together will we truly RISE.

The Directory launched with over 1,000 theatre professionals in the directory and the support of producers, directors, and trade associations across the theatrical industry.

RISE Theatre Directory

Its mission is to increase diversity among the workforce that produces American theatre. That includes, but is not limited to, people of color, women, trans, nonbinary, deaf, and disabled theatre professionals. Everyone has something to contribute to the American story.

The performers we see on stage are just the tip of the proverbial iceberg of the many workers who make theatre happen. Jobs range from stagehands to general managers, to producers.

New York itself is experiencing a renaissance of opportunities for creative and performing artists from diverse backgrounds. We are seeing a creative bloom that is an important part of New York City’s rebirth after social justice protests during the pandemic shutdown. Doors that have long been closed have opened spectacularly in ways that are redefining American performing arts. The RISE Theatre Directory is helping develop this trend in New York City and extend it across America.

Backed By Heavy Hitters

The Directory was conceived by Lin-Manuel Miranda, the playwright and songwriter whose musical “Hamilton” is the Broadway hit of our generation. Its initial support comes from leaders in American theatre:

Increasing diversity offstage leads to a more diverse audience in the front of the house. That’s a win-win for theatre.
