Saint Omer” is Alice Diop’s 2022 film about a pregnant French journalist who becomes absorbed in the trial of a Senegalese woman who admits killing her baby daughter, blaming it on sorcery. In traditional cultures, that might be a valid reason. The experience triggers the journalist’s own memories of her mother, and worries about her own coming motherhood.

Diop is a French director (We) whose films are commentary on contemporary French society. “Saint Omer” is France’s 2023 Oscars entry. It made the Oscar Shortlist for Best International Feature Film at the 95th Academy Awards.

Critics say the movie is very well acted, and an extraordinary narrative feature debut. The film was a 60th New York Film Festival selection.
