The Selfish Giant

This is a short story that appeared in The Happy Prince and Other Tales by the legendary Irish poet Oscar Wilde in 1888.

The selfish giant has a garden filled with beautiful trees and flowers where children like to play. He builds a wall to keep them out and the garden fails.

One day he is woken by a bird and finds the garden growing again. The children have found a way through a hole in the wall.

Realizing his error, the giant returns to the garden. All the children run away, except for one who is trying to climb a tree. The giant helps the boy and then tears down that wall.

The children return, except for the boy the giant helped. Playing with the children makes the giant happy, but he misses the boy.

One winter many years later, the giant notices that part of his garden is blooming. He goes there and finds the very same boy he helped. The boy is the Holy Spirit.

The giant’s body is later found covered in flowers.
