The Socrates Annual sculpture exhibition opens with a reception at the Socrates Sculpture Park in Astoria, Queens on Saturday, October 5, 2019 from 4-6pm. On view through March 8, 2020. FREE
This is an exhibition of work produced by emerging artists during a summer residency in the sculpture park founded by renowned abstract expressionist Mark di Suvero.
Socrates Annual 2019
The work in this year’s show engages the park’s history, landscape and surrounding community.
Latin artists in the show include Jesus Benavente, Tecumseh Ceaser (Native Tec), Chris Domenick, Alva Mooses, and Gabriela Salazar.
The exhibition is curated by Jennie Lamensdorf of Art in Buildings and Rosario Güiraldes of The Drawing Center.

Socrates Annual Opening
October 4, 2019 ~ The opening festivities include a short performance at 4:30pm of Danza de los Viejitos (Dance of the Little Old Men) from Michoacán, Mexico for the sculpture by Alva Mooses Se entra bailando (You enter dancing).
Socrates Sculpture Park
The park was founded by renowned Italian-American sculptor Mark di Suvero. His studio is next door. He set up the park and got NYC Parks to take it over.
Di Suvero is considered to be the last living artist from the time of the abstract expressionists (1946 to mid-1950s). This was when the center of the art world shifted from Paris to New York City.
Di Suvero’s peers were important artists like Clyfford Still, Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning. Di Suvero is important too.
It’s really impressive when leaders help inspire the next generation.
The Park has gorgeous views of Manhattan’s Upper East Side.
