Soledad Barrio & Noche Flamenca, one of NYC’s world-class Spanish Flamenco dance companies, makes its home at West-Park Presbyterian Church in the Upper West Side.

Soledad Barrio is Noche Flamenca

The first thing about Soledad Barrio & Noche Flamenca is Soledad Barrio. In 2011, the most important dance critic in the United States, Alastair Macaulay of the New York Times, called her “one of today’s great dancers of any genre.” Wow!

Even as a little girl, Barrio loved to perform, but she only discovered the real Flamenco when she saw Carlos Saura’s film Bodas de Sangre at age 19. Then she just did it. Within a year, Barrio became a dancer.

The second thing is Artistic Director & Producer Martín Santangelo. He has managed to keep this company alive for over 20 years. That’s to say nothing of maintaining his relationship with his wife, Soledad.

Antigona is Bessie Nominated

Antigona is Soledad Barrio & Noche Flamenca’s adaptation of Sophocle’s story about a woman who defies the king to bury the body of her slain brother, the loser of the battle.

Barrio relates the story to her mother’s experience living through the Spanish Civil War. Hispanic families stay together no matter what.

Antigona has a cast of 17 dancers and musicians. It was nominated for a 2015 Bessie Award.
