Sotheby’s Fall 2019 Impressionist and Modern Art auctions

Works by French and Spanish masters Degas, Monet, Picasso, Rodin, and Signac lead the auction.

The lead piece is Claude Monet’s Charing Cross Bridge (1903) from his London series. Monet made several trips to London between 1899 and 1901. In the morning he would paint the sunrise over Charing Cross Bridge from his hotel room. In the afternoon, he would paint sunsets over Parliament. It is expected to sell in the range of $20,000,000 to $30,000,000 million.

Another important piece in the auction is French Impressionist Gustave Caillebotte’s Richard Gallo et son chien dick, au Petit-Gennevilliers (1884). Caillebotte (1848-1894) was an Impressionist, but painted in a more realistic style than many of his peers. Gallo was a friend of his.

This is Caillebotte’s last painting of his friend and is considered a pinnacle of his portraiture.

French artists include Georges Braque, Gustave Caillebotte, Le Corbusier, Honoré Daumier, Edgar Degas, Paul Gauguin, Fernand Léger, Aristide Maillol, Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Auguste Rodin, Paul Signac, Alfred Sisley, and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.

Italian artists include Marino Marini.

Rufino Tamayo represents Mexico with La Máscara Roja from 1940.

Spanish artists include Óscar Domínguez, Juan Gris, Joan Miró, and Pablo Picasso.

Joaquín Torres-García represents Uruguay with his Constructivo en blanco y negro (Inti) from 1938.
