A group of Spanish works are highlights of this sale. These include a Kitchen Still Life recently attributed to Diego Velázquez and an image of Saint Veronica Holding the Veil attributed to El Greco.
Diego Velázquez (1599-1660) was one of the most important painters of the Spanish Golden Age. He was the lead artist in the court of King Philip IV.
The Velázquez Kitchen Still Life is a work that was newly discovered around 2000. It is attributed to Velázquez through stylistic and painterly comparisons with the nine bodegones that are accepted works of the artist. Analysts compare the brazier, pottery, brazz mortar and pestle, tin oil lamps, red onions, and garlic with those in Velázquez’ The Old Woman Frying Eggs (1618). The qualities of the artist’s handling of paint are also compared with known copies of his works.
A Bodegón is a still life of simple objects in a storeroom where poor people can buy something to eat. It’s an old version of a Bodega (corner market) that is so common in New York City today.
The study of common objects is part of a turn towards naturalism going on in Europe at the time, of which Velázquez is one of the early masters.
This particular Velázquez Bodegón is unique in that it does not have any people in it. The sale estimate is $1,500,000 — 2,000,000.
