Spain National Soccer Team

Spain has been coached by Julen Lopetegui since July 2016. He came from Porto in Portugal and spent his early career in the Spanish youth leagues.

Defender Sergio Ramos is captain.

Of special note is NYCFC (New York City Football Club) attacker David Silva. He is one of the few late-career European players to carry on a high level of play in Major League Soccer where he is the league’s top scorer. Silva was called back up to the national team this year.

Spain Soccer World Cup 2018 ~ Round of 16

Spain 1 – 1 (P) Russia

Stadion Luzhniki in Moscow, Russia

Spain dominates the game but loses on its own timidity. After going ahead on an early own goal by Ignashevich at the 12th minute, Spain played ticky – tacky possession football, but never made it into the goal. That continued through full time and extra time.

In the penalty shootout, Koke missed. On the next penalty, Russia’s Akinfeev jumped the wrong way, but caught the ball with enough of his foot to send the shot away. That was it.
