Spring Break Art Show is an annual Armory Week art fair that shows curators rather than galleries in underused historic New York City spaces.

It is one of the best art fairs for discovering what is happening right now in New York City.

They Just Do It

The Spring Break Art Show was founded in 2009 by Andrew Gori and Ambre Kelly of The They Co. “They” are disruptive art producers.

The producers essentially curate a group of curators both known and unknown. The show provides free space and and online marketplace. The show’s mission is to upend and stretch the boundaries of traditional art market practice.

If you are looking for the next big thing, the Spring Break Art Show is the place to look.

Spring Break Art Show 2017 looks into Black Mirror

The 6th annual Spring Break Art Show is at 4 Times Square (formerly the Condé Nast building, the one that currently has an H&M sign on its rooftop) February 28 – March 6, 2017.

2017’s theme is the Black Mirror, a look at how the autobiographical artworks of the selfie generation show or hide the artist.

A Black Mirror in art is a small convex mirror with a dark surface that was used by nineteenth-century landscape artists to distort a scene and create a picturesque quality.

The Black Mirror is also a British television show of horror stories that explore the ironic consequences of new technologies. It is sort of a contemporary Twilight Zone.

The Spring Break Art Show 2017 presents over 150 curators and art by over 400 artists that express the theme. “Oh wait, let me take a picture.”

At press time, the curators had not yet been announced.
