St Patrick’s Day Celebrates the Patron Saint of Ireland

St Patrick’s Day NYC commemorates the traditional death of the patron saint of Ireland on March 17. St Patrick and the Irish who followed him have been the great evangelizers of Roman Catholicism. Irish established Roman Catholicism in New York City and still lead it.

Coastal Spanish and French Share Ireland’s Celtic Culture

Spanish Galicians and French Bretons share Celtic culture with Welsh, Scottish, and western Irish. We are Atlantic sailors with a culture of kilts, bagpipes and all.

The St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Fifth Avenue is New York City’s big Irish festival.

There are also celebrations at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Midtown East and at The Basilica of St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral in Nolita.

Irish suffered terrible discrimination when we came to New York as in “No Dogs Or Irish.” Locals threw stones at us when we stepped off of boats into the Lower East Side. A lot of blood was spilt as beautifully dramatized in Scorcese’s “Gangs of New York” (2002).

We overcame discrimination by joining the police. It was our way out of poverty and marginalization. We still control the NYPD.

There used to be an Irish bar on almost every corner of New York City. On St. Patrick’s Day, the city streets turn green early in the day from overenthusiastic celebrants. Take it easy.
