Stephen Petronio is an Italian – American contemporary dance choreographer. Petronio did his studies at Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts. He is a follower of experimental dancer Steve Paxton of the Judson Dance Theater.


Stephen Petronio Company

Petronio founded his dance company in 1984. The Company has performed in 40 countries around the world, including 23 seasons at The Joyce Theater.

Stephen Petronio Company has collaborated with many well-known composers (Lou Reed, Laurie Anderson, and Nick Cave), visual artists (Cindy Sherman and Teresita Fernández), and fashion designers (Narciso Rodriguez and Manolo Blahnik).

The Company has an interest in both preserving the past of modern dance, and the preparing the future of the art form. Bloodlines is a series of revivals of works by modern dance masters. The Petronio Residency Center is a retreat in Cairo, New York that seeks to develop the next generation of postmodern dancers.
