Thaïs is Jules Massenet’s French lyric comedy based on a real courtesan in the court of Alexander the Great at Alexandria, Egypt.
Louis Gallet wrote the libretto. It is based on the novel Thaïs (1890) by Anatole France.
Thaïs premiered at the Paris Opera in 1894. It premiered at the Met in 1907.
Thaïs and Athanaël swap roles
Thaïs is a popular courtesan in Alexandrian society and a priestess of Venus. The Christian monk Athanaël, one of her former lovers, decides to rescue her from her life.
At first Thaïs resists. Finally, she follows Athanaël into a convent.
Not being able to see her again, Athanaël is heartbroken. Now he tries to take her away from the convent, but she has changed into a saintly persona and dies in a vision of angels.

The Metropolitan Opera performs Thaïs seven times between Saturday, November 11 and Saturday, December 2.
This is John Cox’ production with costumes by Christian Lacroix.
Mexican-American soprano Ailyn Pérez (Chicago, Illinois) sings the starring role.
Emmanuel Villaume conducts.
