‘Vantage Point 24 – Celebrating 20 years,’ a photography exhibition of work by students and alumni of ICP at The Point, opens with a reception on Wednesday, July 25, 2018 from 4:30 – 6:30 pm. The exhibition is on view Monday – Friday through December 31, 2018.

It’s always the best of times and the worst of times in The Bronx. We get a bad rap for the worst of it, but the best includes Latin Jazz, Salsa, Hip-Hop, Reggaeton and a lot more popular culture.

Bad stuff makes the news, but the good stuff is mostly seen only by people inside the community. That is what this exhibition is about. It’s photos of people in the neighborhood taken by people in the neighborhood.

Hunts Point

Hunts Point is a neighborhood in The South Bronx.

New York City’s food distribution industry moved here in the 1960s and 70s when Washington Market was torn down to build the World Trade Center and Battery Park City. The Fulton Fish Market moved here from downtown Manhattan in 2005.

Today the Hunts Point Food Distribution Center is one of the largest in the world. It covers 329 acres.

The long-neglected commercial neighborhood is now experiencing the horrors of gentrification.

The Point CDC

The Point CDC is a Community Development Corporation that was formed in 1993 to help revitalize the Hunts Point section of The Bronx.

New York City was another world then. It was still climbing off the bottom of 1977.

International Center for Photography (ICP)

The International Center of Photography is the world’s leading photography institution. It was founded by legendary photojournalist Cornell Capa in 1974 to create socially and politically minded images with the potential to educate and change the world.

ICP has a museum, a school, a library and a cultural center. It produces the annual Infinity Awards to recognize excellence in photography.

ICP at The Point

In 1977 ICP joined forces with The Point to teach photography, critical thinking, writing and public speaking to foster self-esteem, community development and social change.

More than 200 photographers have gone through the program.

‘Vantage Point 24 – Celebrating 20 years’ exhibits work by almost 50 students and alumni of ICP at The Point.
