Tito Nieves

Humberto “Tito” Nieves was born in Rio Piedras, San Juan, Puerto Rico. University of Puerto Rico is there. It’s a tough neighborhood now, but a lot of great musicians are from Rio Piedras.

After going to high school in Brooklyn, Tito made his breakthrough with Orquesta Cimarron in New York City. As a young man, he sang with many of the legends. Now everybody wants to sing with him.

When he went solo in 1986, Tito sang some songs in English, which distinguished him from other salsa singers. His most famous song is probably his remake of the classic boogaloo (1960s Latin R&B fusion) “I Like It Like That” (1996).

Tito is also remembered for “El Amor Más Bonito,” “Sonámbulo,” and “Fabricando Fantasias.” When we listen to that last Titet Curet Alonso song, it makes us cry because we are not in Puerto Rico.

When you hear Tito’s music, you just want to grab someone and dance. We like it like that.
