The Tony Awards®, officially the Antoinette Perry Award for Excellence in Theatre, honor excellence in Broadway theatre. The awards are presented by The Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing.

71st annual Tony Awards 2017

The ceremony was broadcast live on CBS from Radio City Music Hall in Midtown, with Kevin Spacey hosting June 11, 2017 from 8-11pm.

The big winner was Dear Evan Hansen with 6 Tonys including “Best New Musical” and star Ben Platt’s “Best Leading Actor in a Musical.” It’s about a lonely teenager who unexpectedly becomes a social media star.

Hello Dolly! won “Best Revival of a Musical” with star Bette Midler winning “Best Leading Actress.”

Oslo, about the 1993 Middle East peace talks, won best new play.

Bette Midler stole the show with a wonderfully long acceptance speech.

Latin Winner

Italian-American Santo Loquasto won “Best Costume Design for a Musical” for his work on Hello Dolly!.

Loquasto first rose to prominence with The Cherry Orchard (1977). He is known for his American Ballet Theatre production of Don Quixote, and Broadway show Grand Hotel: The Musical (1990).

2017 Tony Award Nominations

Nominations were announced Tuesday, May 2. Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812 earned the most nominations.

Latin Nominees

There were no overtly Latin shows this year, although Sweat is about the personal struggles of workers in a northeastern community whose factory moves to Mexico.

Sweat, whose book won a Pulitzer prize this year, is nominated for “Best Play.”

Several Latin-American artists earned nominations.

Danny DeVito

Italian-American movie star Danny DeVito was nominated for “Best Performance by an actor in a Featured Role in a Play” for his role as Gregory Solomon in Arthur Miller’s The Price at The American Airlines Theatre. It is still playing through May 14.

Jenn Colella

Italian-American actress Jenn Colella was nominated for “Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical” for her role as Beverley in Come from Away.

Santo Loquasto

Italian-American Santo Loquasto earned “Best Scenic Design for a Musical” and “Best Costume Design for a Musical” nominations for his work on Hello Dolly!.

Ruben Santiago-Hudson

Puerto Rican-American Ruben Santiago-Hudson earned a “Best Direction of a Play” nomination for August Wilson’s Jitney. Santiago-Hudson keeps earning award nominations. He is definitely someone to watch.


70th Annual Tony Awards 2016

The 70th Annual Tony Awards were broadcast live from the Beacon Theatre on CBS June 12, 2016 at 8pm. Red Carpet coverage started at 5:30pm. The awards were followed by a Behind-the-Scenes show.
