The high-level General Debate starts Tuesday, September 25, 2018 and ends about two weeks later on Friday, October 5, 2018. The big shots come in this second week.
During the General Debate, traffic in Midtown East is terrible and security is tight. Expect street closures and no parking. It’s better to avoid driving in Midtown East at this time.

María Fernanda Espinosa Garcés
Ecuadorian poet and diplomat María Fernanda Espinosa Garcés is UNGA 73 President-elect.
She is the first Latin American woman to lead the Assembly, and the fourth woman ever to do so. She has published five books of poetry and is an Ecuadorian National Poetry Prize winner (1990).
We have great hopes for her experience in government negotiations on human rights, indigenous women and climate change.

The 72nd UN General Assembly (UNGA 72) opens at UN Headquarters in Midtown East on Tuesday, September 12, 2017 at 3pm. The UN General Assembly (UNGA) is convened for the entire year.
The UN General Debate is two weeks from September 12 – 25, 2017. The big shots come in this second week.
Slovack diplomat Miroslav Lajčák was elected president of the 72nd UN General Assembly on May 31, 2017. He is a three-term Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of Slovakia.
Lajčák’s priorities for his presidency are:

- Prevention and mediation for sustaining peace

- Political momentum for the SDGs and climate
- Human rights and equality, including equal opportunities for genders
