Under the Radar Festival 2018

Under the Radar Festival at the Public Theater

Under the Radar Festival at the Public Theater

The 14th Under the Radar Festival is at the Public Theater January 4 – 15, 2018. This season features Cuban, Dominican, Italian, Brooklyn and other international artists.

Antigonón, un Contingente Épico

Direct from the Teatro El Público in Havana, Cuba, Antigonón, un Contingente Épico weaves Cuban history into Sophocles’ Greek drama Antigone.

That’s the story where against the orders of the king, Antigone buries her brother who died on the battlefield of rebellion. Tried for the crime, she claims the superiority of divine law over human law as a defense.

Locked in a tomb as punishment, Antigone hangs herself. Discovering this, the king’s son kills himself. Discovering that, the queen kills herself.

Cuban theatre has a way of forcing its characters to deal with the contradictions in themselves. In Antigonón, five characters connect the past with the present in surprising ways.
