Valentino

Valentino Clemente Ludovico Garavani was born in Voghera, Lombardy, Italy on May 11, 1932. He apprenticed in Paris, then opened his first atelier in Rome in 1960. There he became known for his Valentino Red dresses, and met his future business partner Giancarlo Giammetti.

Jacqueline Kennedy saw a friend wearing a Valentino dress and tracked him down. She became a client during her period of mourning for Jack Kennedy, and had Valentino design the dress for her wedding to Aristotle Onassis.

In 1966, Valentino developed his V logo. He spent much of the 1970s in New York City with the Andy Warhol and Studio 54 crowd.

Valentino retired in 2008. The same year he appeared in theMatt Tyrnauer’s documentary Valentino: The Last Emperor.
