The Venice International Film Festival (Mostra Internazionale d’Arte Cinematografica della Biennale di Veneziais the world’s oldest film festival.

The festival is one of the big three film festivals, along with Cannes and Berlin. It is produced by the Venice Biennale.

Today Venice has a reputation for launching films that win Academy Awards.

74th Venice International Film Festival 2017

The 74th Venice International Film Festival at the Palazzo del Cinema on Lido island in Venice, Italy is August 30 – September 9, 2017. Annette Bening is this year’s president.

Official Selection

Out of the 21 feature films in the Official Selection, these have a Latin connection.

Mother! by Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan), is a psychological thriller starring Jennifer Lawrence with Spanish actor Javier Bardem, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Ed Harris.

Mexican director Guillermo Del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth) premieres The Shape of Water. It is a Creature from the Black Lagoon tale set in Cold War America.

La Villa is a French film by Robert Guédiguian.

Mektoub, My Love: Canto Uno is a French film by Abdellatif Kechiche (Blue is the Warmest Color).

Jusqu’a La Garde (Custody) is a French film by Xavier Legrand.

Ammore e Malavita is an Italian film by Manetti Bros.

Hannah is an Italian film by Andrea Pallaoro.

Una Famiglia is an Italian film by Sebastiano Riso.

The Leisure Seeker is an Italian film by Paolo Virzì. It stars Hellen Mirren and Donald Sutherland.
