ALEXANDRIA, Egypt ~ Octavius, who later became the Roman emperor known as Augustus, defeated the forces of Antony and Cleopatra on August 1, 30 CE.
The Month of August
Augustus Caesar (Octavius) changed the name of the Roman month of Sextilis to Augustus because he was jealous of Julius Caesar for whom July is named. Many of Augustus’ greatest military victories took place during the month. The current political environment makes you wonder if a particularly insecure American president might try to change the name of a month for himself. LOL or cry out loud.
Cleopatra’s Needles
Alexandria was an important Greek city at the mouth of the Nile River on the Mediterranean Sea. It was the ancient capital of Egypt.
In ancient times, Alexandria was known for its lighthouse and libraries. During the Roman period, it was the second greatest city in the Roman Empire after Rome itself.
In colonial times, Alexandria had two great obelisks. One was taken to London and the other is in Central Park, behind the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
