El Prodigio in New York City

“El Prodigio” Krency Garcia, the Dominican merengue accordionist, opens the 2020 Artists Studio in the Veterans Room at the Park Avenue Armory in Manhattan’s Upper East Side on Tuesday, March 3, 2020, at 7 & 9pm. $45 plus fees. armoryonpark.org 🇩🇴

The series, curated by MacArthur Genius Jason Moran, presents the work of artists who defy categorization.

“El Prodigio” Krency Garcia

Garcia plays merengue like you haven’t heard it before. Many of us know the simple 2/2 merengue dance which is one of the ways couples find each other in the Dominican Republic and across the Caribbean and Latin world.

The thing is that every little town in the DR has its own particular style, just like every little town in France has its own flavor of wine and cheese. Garcia can take you on a jazzy journey through a Dominican Republic that you probably didn’t even know existed.

This is not your father’s merengue. Get down with El Prodigo’s saboroso (tasty) “güira,” “tambura” and “perico ripiao.”

We don’t know if you CAN DANCE at this show, but we doubt that you CAN NOT DANCE at this show. So wear your soft shoes and spice up your life with some amor del Car-r-r-ibe. That is what merengue is for. Welcome to our world.
