Rauw Alejandro is a Puerto Rican reggaeton, Latin trap, and pop singer. He is one of the artists who is softening and stretching reggaeton and trap with his R&B and pop sensibilities. He has a great career on his own, but is also a Grammy-nominated songwriter for other major artists, like Bad Bunny.

Rauw Alejandro

Raúl Alejandro Ocasio Ruiz was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico on January 10, 1993. He was raised there and in Miami and New York City. He went to school with Anuel AA. Both came up around the same time, but with different personas.

He spent his youth working on becoming a soccer player. Giving that up, he started putting songs on SoundCloud in 2014.

By 2017, he was collaborating with top reggaeton artists and got really popular in Puerto Rico. In 2017, his debut single “Toda” rose on the charts. A 2018 remix reached over 1 billion views on YouTube. His profile grew with his “Fantasías” single with Farruko, and its remix. Rauw’s relationship with Spanish flamenco pop singer Rosalía from 2019 to 2023 was tabloid news.

He started making albums with “Afrodisíasco” in 2020.

Editor Kíko Keith ~ In 2023, I celebrated my birthday at a teteo (car meet, street party) in Capotillo 42, the most dangerous barrio in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. My Dominican friends are afraid to go there, and think I’m nuts (okay). At the time I didn’t know any better, but it was great. All I saw was barrio friendship, barrio love, great dancing, and loads of street style. The 42 is the cradle of dem bow (Dominican reggaeton) which I never heard of before that night. The next day, it was all I heard all over Santo Domingo. There is a lot of great dem bow, but Rauw had just released “Tamo en Nota” with Angel Dior, one of the 42 dem bow artists. It’s a thumping dem bow with Rauw’s pop styling. The Dominican Puerto Rican mix worked.
