Explore the Latin side of Doc Fortnight 2026, the Museum of Modern Art’s documentary film festival. It’s an important festival because MoMA holds one of the world’s great film collections.

The documentary form is evolving from pure documentation to a mix of documentation and storytelling.

25th Doc Fortnight 2026

The 25th Doc Fortnight 2026 documentary film festival is at MoMA, the Museum of Modern Art, in Midtown, Manhattan; from February 26 to March 12, 2026. 🇲🇽 🇵🇹 🇺🇸 🇺🇾

This season screens 14 feature films and 19 shorts with a focus on political history that is relevant to our chaotic political moment.

“Cara a Cara” (Face to Face) is a portrait of Jewish-Uruguayan director Federico Veiroj’s father, told as an examination of the subtle ways that humans communicate face to face. 🇺🇾

“As Estações” (The Seasons), by Portuguese director Maureen Fazendeiro, is a non-linear sensory journey through rural Portugal’s Alentejo region that blends documentary and theatrical elements. 🇵🇹

“Músicas” by Mexican director Lila Avilés, is a short film that follows an Indigenous women’s brass band. 🇲🇽

“Powwow People,” by Sky Hopinka (Ho-Chunk/Pechanga), documents a Native American powwow staged for the film, that immerses you in traditional Native American dance. 🇺🇸

“Nova ’78,” by Aaron Brookner and Portuguese director Rodrigo Areias, tells the story of the Nova Convention in which famous counterculture Beat, Punk, and Classical artists like Allen Ginsberg, Patti Smith, Philip Glass, and Laurie Anderson celebrated William S. Burroughs’ return to the States at a theater in Manhattan’s East Village. Edited from rediscovered footage by Brookner’s father, the most surprising thing about the film is that we are still struggling with the same issues (Iran, nuclear annihilation, queer feer) today. 🇵🇹

History

Since 2001, Doc Fortnight has presented new work by both emerging and established directors. The documentary category is blurring as directors seek new modes of expression. The festival keeps evolving as well.
